Tooter Turtle (sometimes spelled Tutor) was a cartoon about a rather dopey-looking, talking turtle who first appeared on TV in 1960, as a segment, along with The Hunter (a detective dog), as part of the King Leonardo program.
Tooter's segment was always a simple morality play, which involved Tooter calling on his friend, Mr. Wizard the Lizard, to transport him to some place in the past that Tooter had read about and wanted to visit. Since none of Tooter's trips ever worked out, the moral of each segment was always the same: "There's no place like home."
When Tooter's trip finally became a catastrophe, he always called out the same thing, the famous, "Help, Mr. Wizard!" Mr. Wizard would rescue him with the incantation, "Drizzle, drazzle, druzzle, drome, time for this one to come home." Then, Mr. Wizard would always give Tooter the same advice: "Be what you is and not what you is not. Folks that is what they is, is the happiest lot." Tooter never learned, though.
The most major pop culture reference to Tooter Turtle comes from The Matrix. In a scene where Neo is attempting to find a way to return to the real world, he contacts his operator and says to them, "Mr. Wizard, get me out of here." This is a reference to Mr. Wizard's rescuing abilities.
Tooter debuted on NBC, on Saturday, October 15, 1960, and ran for 43 episodes over two years. His voice was done by Allen Swift, who also did Simon Bar Sinister, the main villain on the Underdog show. The voice of Mr. Wizard was Sandy Becker.
