Space Babe :: Dana Gillespie

So I was cleaning some stuff off the DVR late last night and decided to give some time to The People That Time Forgot (1977), based oh-so-very-loosely on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. Turner Classics ran it a couple of weeks back, and I knew I'd seen it probably 30 years ago, but what the hey, I'd recorded it, so I switched it on.

Not great. Hell, what starring Doug McClure could be considered great? But it did star Sarah Douglas, who I recall fondly as a Phantom Zone criminal from the Superman movies, and there were dinosaurs. Not particularly good dinosaurs, but I'm not fussy at midnight.

Then "cavegirl" Ajar appeared. My jaw dropped into my lap. How had I forgotten this actress?

Funny thing, I looked up a bio on actress Dana Gillespie (born Richenda Antoinette de Winterstein Gillespie in 1949), and she's a blues singer! In the early 1970s, she did background vocals for David Bowie! (In fact, Bowie produced her first solo LP in 1973!) She also played Mary Magdalene in the first-ever London production of Jesus Christ Superstar! Whatta gal!

And to think that she had enough time to play a very hot prehistoric cavegirl in The People That Time Forgot!

Space Babe :: Patricia Tallman

I've been recently working my way again through all five seasons of Babylon 5, this time on DVD, and I'm reminded what a hot number Patricia Tallman is. Old B5 viewers may recall that Patricia played telepath and Vorlon groupie Lyta Alexander on the series in 35 episodes between 1995 and 1998. Plus she starred in the series pilot and Thirdspace, a B5 movie made for TNT in 1998. Tallman's Space Babe credentials, though, extend beyond Babylon 5; she appeared with some frequency on most of the Star Trek franchises, including Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. Now 50 years old, Patricia Tallman remains cute, perky, and a redhead. Very nice.

Now that she's starring in the new movie Resident Evil 3: Extinction, there's no denying Ali Larter's qualifications as a genuine ROM Space Babe. For the past year, I've been admiring her in the sci-fi TV series Heroes as the split-personality "hero" Niki-Jessica Sanders ...and now she's on the Big Screen, traipsing through the sands of Las Vegas, fighting off all sorts of futuristic baddies. Ali is kick-ass!

Space Babe :: Barbara Crampton

Stuart Gordon's From Beyond (1986), his Lovecraftian follow-up to the classic Re-Animator (1985), has finally -- for the very first time -- been released on DVD, and in a full dierctor's cut. So it's finally time to sing the praises of the delicious Barbara Crampton, who memorably appeared in both movies. I first went ga-ga over Miss C in Re-Animator, where she played the cutey-pie daughter of the college dean. She has two sex scenes in that film...one of which may qualify as not just over-the-top but groundbreaking in the history of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi movies. But then there was From Beyond...

This was Barbara's real star-vehicle. She was, for all intents and purposes, the lead. She played the slightly mad shrink who turns from uptight librarian type to full-throttle, leatherbound, whip-wielding sex kitten. Her performance is brilliant, and thank gawd we now have it to watch and study on DVD.

Interestingly, Ms. Crampton went from making these fantastic genre movies in the 1980s to a career as a very big TV soap star, appearing in Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, Guiding Light, and The Bold and the Beautiful. And now in her mid-40s, she's still extremely hot.

Space Babe :: Megan Fox

The giant robot movie Transformers has three things goin' for it. First...well, heck, it has a whole load of very cool giant freakin' robots in it. Second, there are moments that are funny as hell. And third -- and maybe most important -- it stars Megan Fox, who blasted me through the back of the theater when I first saw her. Whew. Just one sci-fi flic, and I feel compelled to place her in the Space Babe Pantheon.

The WB network has announced that delectable 22-year-old Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort will play Kara, aka Supergirl, in their Smallville series next season.
